System to support deaf children in school in crisis
A recent survey has been done which shows that the system to help deaf children in school is 'in crisis'. Peter Gale, Principal and CEO of Mary Hare commented, 'I am concerned that the needs of deaf children seem to be seen as 'nice to haves' when they are essential and non-negotiable. Whether that be regular teaching by a qualified Teacher of the Deaf, weekly Speech and Language Therapy, or for some, a deaf peer group, these vulnerable learners' needs have to be met. In my own school I meet too many young people for the first time after things have begun to go wrong and the effects on the child can be serious and profound. Many deaf children will sit quietly, falling further behind and getting more unhappy but without disrupting learning. This means that their needs are often underestimated.'
