On Monday 25th November, the annual Variety Disability Sports Awards was held, which recognises the inspiring sporting achievements of people with disabilities. We were thrilled that Sophie was nominated for the Rising Star Award.

Sophie’s nomination came after being the youngest player selected to play for the GB deaf women’s football team. Her debut game was against Poland and the team successfully got the win – with Sophie also scoring a goal.

We are also proud of Amelie who has also made the GB squad, and both Sophie and Amelie have put a lot of hard work and training since April this year.

The nomination marks a huge achievement for Sophie, who shares her experience of the event:

“My experience at the award ceremony was fantastic everyone was so lovely and each of their stories were so inspiring.

I never expected to get recognition for doing a sport I love doing. I always have put 100% into the football and for all my hard work to get recognised it’s like all my hard work has paid off.”

Cheryl Colby, who is Head of PE at Mary Hare, shares her delight in Sophie's achievement, “It was my pleasure to accompany Sophie and her family to the Variety Disability Sports Awards. Sophie has worked incredibly hard in the last year, to make progress on her goals and make that step up to the next level of competition. We were so proud as a school that the Variety Club have recognised her as the youngest player to represent GB deaf football and a rising star- alongside some other incredible competitors.

It was very nerve wracking watching the GB Deafolympics qualifier vs Poland, but we did chuckle that her winning goal was so Sophie-like.

We look forward to hearing about her road to Tokyo and hope GB deaf football secure all the funding that is needed.”

We are proud of Sophie and her ambitious goals as she now looks towards selection for the 2025 Deaflympics where she hopes to be on the GB deaf women’s team.
