“Rugby this year has been brilliant “

And we are not talking about the 6 nations!

Katie Dening, a Y13 pupil, has spent this season playing for her local rugby club, Cambridge in their Rubies U18 girls team. She plays in the back row at number 6, and is the enforcer on the team, known for her big tackles and strong running game. Off the pitch, she’s equally involved in the team, helping with younger players and enjoying social nights out in Cambridge with the rest of the Rubies.

Recently, Katie was asked to go to trials for Eastern Counties, where she scored five tries and cemented her place in the regional setup – her first game is in five weeks against East Midlands. She has also been invited to go and train with the England Deaf Women’s team, starting in March.

“Rugby this year has been brilliant.” said Katie. “I love the rough and tumble of it, especially tackling – I love putting in those big hits! And the other girls have been brilliant – I was welcomed from the very first training session. Plus it really helped me relax during all the A level revision.” Katie is confident that she’ll break into the England Deaf team before long, but her heart is set on the full England team – time will tell!
