Founded on over 100 years of expertise, Mary Hare has a dedicated Professional Courses team who have been delivering a range of professional training, post-graduate courses, and research in deaf education since 1996.  LJMU has a wealth of experience in training and courses in sensory impairment, and this new partnership will ensure that teachers continue to receive practical, close-to-practice training, preparing them to meet the unique challenges faced by deaf students.

These courses will meet the Department for Education’s Mandatory Qualification Standards which ensures that they adhere to a rigorous standard of high-quality education and training, and that teachers possess the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively support deaf young people.

Dr Joy Rosenberg, Director of Courses at Mary Hare, says, “Mary Hare’s new partnership with Liverpool John Moores University, allows us to collaborate with both an historical course for Teachers of the Visually Impaired and a newly partnered course for Teachers of Multi-Sensory Impaired children and young people. This makes LJMU the only university in the UK offering training for teachers in all three sensory-impairment, each hosted at a special school to maximise close-to-practice training; in addition to being the only university to offer training for educational audiologists.”

Dr Ceri Daniels, Director of the School of Education, says, “The School of Education are proud to welcome as collaborative partners: Seashell Trust, offering the Mandatory Qualification for Teachers of the Mult-Sensory Impaired; and Mary Hare offering Educational Audiology and the Mandatory Qualification for Teachers of the Deaf. These partnerships offer close-to-practice training for specialists working with children and young people with sensory impairments.”

Applications are now being accepted for the September 2025 intake of the PGDip Teaching Deaf Learners course, and expressions of interest are welcome for the September 2026 intake of the Educational Audiology course.

As the only Teacher of the Deaf course available in the South, Mary Hare will continue to offer training on site, and look forward to working with their new northern connection to our awarding partner university, Liverpool John Moores.

Further announcements will be made about stand-alone modules for CPD and Master’s degree.
