Big Garden Birdwatch
Our Primary pupils have been busy during January and February with RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch and National Nestbox Week
The 'nurturing nature' theme has been studied across the curriculum including Art and outdoor activities giving the pupils an opportunity to learn more about wildlife and ways in which it can be welcomed into our gardens and grounds. They pupils spent time recording the different types of birds that visited the grounds at the school and in their gardens at home
Robins and blackbirds were some of the most popular species to be spotted
The pupils then had great fun building nestboxes, making fatballs and creating their own feather inspired artwork
With the help of our very own DIY guru, Colin, the pupils put together the bird boxes, learning how to use a screwdriver and hammer
Rachel Solly, Assistant Head at Mary Hare Primary School, said: “The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the different birds and their unique habitats. Some children commented that they feel proud knowing that they are making a difference to local wildlife. We hope the nestboxes will hopefully attract more birds to our school grounds during the colder months of the year.”
