English Literature

Course details

At AS Level students study two components:
• Shakespeare and Poetry Pre-1900
• Dystopian Prose Literature Post-1900

Students are expected to analyse how language, structure and form create meaning for readers as well as developing their critical literary skills.

For A Level, students study three further components:
• Shakespeare, Drama and Poetry Pre-1900 paying close attention to language
• Comparative and Contextual Study with a focus on character, theme and genre
• Critical and Comparative study which focuses on more modern texts, further developing their research, analytical and independent study skills.

They will also engage with the views of socio-historic Contexts and different literary critics.

Entry requirements
Five GCSEs at 5 or above, including English at Grade 5 or 6, are required for this course.

Course assessment
AS Level:
• Two components will be assessed by mock examination.

A Level:
• Components one and two are assessed by external examination
• Component three will be assessed by a 3000 word coursework submission
