Course details
This four-unit specification requires students to develop understanding and knowledge as well as critical skills for the analysis of choreography and performance within their own work and in professional repertoire gain experience of choreography and performance through practice gain in-depth knowledge of specific study areas and professional works.
Unit 1 – General dance knowledge
Theory based unit of work to deepen students knowledge and
understanding of technical and expressive skills, technique development
and good studio practice.
Unit 2 – Solo Choreography and Group Performance
Students develop their choreography and performance skills by learning about choreographic techniques, practicing creating dances of their own and participating in performance works in duos or trios.
Unit 3 – Dance appreciation: Content and Context
Students study dance history, this could include for example: Modern dance, 1965 – 1985 / Dance in the American musicals 1930s - 1940s. Students study a professional dance work.
Unit 4 – Group choreography and solo performance
Students will increase their knowledge and understanding for unit 3 by performing a solo dance based on one of the movement styles from the period of history they have studied or based on the technique of one of the choreographers of the set works they have analysed.
Entry requirements
There are no specific entry requirements, however, an interest in dance is essential. This course is a natural progression from GCSE dance, therefore, any pupil who has studied GCSE dance will be at an obvious advantage.
Course assessment
Unit 1 – Written Paper 1 hour 30 minutes
Unit 2 – Practical examination (controlled assessment – coursework)
Unit 3 – Written Paper 1 hour 30 minutes
Unit 4 – Practical examination
