Construction Skills

Course details

There are two levels to the qualification, Entry Level 3 and Level 1. This course is based around the interests of the students, and could cover some of the following activities:
• Health and Safety test
• A range of carpentry techniques (halving joints, housing joints, mortice and tenon joints, angled halving joints)
• A range of plumbing tasks (bending copper pipe, soldering copper pipe, jointing pipe using a range of jointing techniques, draining down and re-fitting radiators, installing a toilet and basin)
• A range of bricklaying tasks (constructing a brick wall, constructing block walling, constructing half brick return corners, constructing cavity walls in block and brick work)
• A range of electrical tasks (wiring a plug, installing one and two way lighting circuits, constructing a PVC wiring circuit, threading and jointing conduit)
• A range of landscaping tasks (laying block paving, setting out and laying gravel paths)

General skills:
Throughout the qualification you will develop your technical knowledge and learn new vocabulary.

As a trades person you need to measure accurately, so throughout the course you will practice using a tape measure and working within tolerances. You will also practice using a range of different levels so that you know if your work is straight.

We help you to problem solve and look at different ways to complete a construction job. We help you to break down complicated installations so that you know what materials you will need, what tools you will need and the order in which you will complete the task.

Entry requirements
You should have completed your GCSE courses and taken the examinations. You must be 16 years of age.

Course assessment
This course is assessed through a combination of practical tasks and short written tests.
