Chemistry
Course details
The subject content is divided into three broad subject areas. You will build on your practical skills in all three areas:
• Physical chemistry
• Inorganic chemistry
• Organic chemistry
Practical work:
You will carry out 12 set practical activities and the skills you learn from these will form part of the last written paper. You will also carry out a wide range of other practical work to help your understanding of the course. Candidates need to be aware of the complex language demands of Chemistry before embarking on the course.
Entry requirements
A good grade at GCSE Combined Science/Chemistry is essential – preferably Grade 6 or above. A minimum Grade 4 at GCSE Maths is also essential.
Course assessment
AS Level:
• Paper 1: 1 hour 30 mins Physical and inorganic chemistry and practical skills (50% of total marks)
• Paper 2: 1 hour 30 mins Physical and organic chemistry and practical skills (50% of total marks)
A Level:
• Paper 1: 2 hours Physical and inorganic chemistry (35% of total marks)
• Paper 2: 2 hours Physical and organic chemistry (35% of total marks)
• Paper 3: 2 hours Questions across the whole specification (30% of total marks)
