Carpentry

Course details

There is a large practical element to the course. Level 1 provides a good introduction with lots of time spent in the workshop working with Hard and Softwoods. For Level 2 you will get a deeper insight into what type of work that is carried out by a carpenter, including: hanging doors, kitchen fitting and erecting roofs.

Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery:
This course begins with an introduction to the course and venues ensuring that students feel confident working in them before starting their coursework.
Students will undertake construction and maintenance of structures and will also assist with looking after the woodland and school site and may make items that can be sold to help fund the programme.

Level 2 Site Carpentry:
• Health, Safety, and Welfare in construction
• Principles of building construction from foundations to roofs
• Information and communication within the construction industry
• First fix operations involving flooring, roofing, frames, partitions, and stairs
• Second fixing operations involving doors, kitchens, and skirting
• Carpentry maintenance involving splicing windows sills to recording Victorian box sash windows
• Setting up and operating power tools including circular saw

Students will be provided with polo shirts and sweatshirts to wear for practical work and PPE for outside working. They will require steel toe cap boots.

Entry requirements
You should have completed your GCSE courses and taken the examinations. You must be 16 years of age.

Course assessment
Level 1: This consists of various options for units undertaken and the resulting qualification can be tailored to individual students.

All students are required to do written assessments in addition to their practical work. The teacher will take photos and videos of practical work that will be submitted to the exam board as evidence towards the tasks completed.

Level 2: Practical coursework and assessments will be marked through a set practical tasks.

Underpinning knowledge is assessed via internally set test papers and online exams.
