Animal Care

Course details

At Mary Hare, we are constantly expanding our animal collection to provide a unique opportunity for our students to develop good working knowledge of animal husbandry and care. This will include daily health checks, feeding and watering, and behaviour monitoring.

Our collections include a range of species such as: poultry, a small collection of reptiles, and small mammals.

We aim to give students the confidence they need to progress onto further education or a career.

This course is both practical and theory based which can include:
• Planning and monitor feeding
• Anatomy and physiology
• Animal behaviour and communication
• Promoting animal health
• Animal handling and safe working

We do regular trips to other animal collections to further student knowledge of other species and how they carry out husbandry practices. In previous years, we have been involved in breeding programmes and hatched chicken and duck eggs.

What should you wear?
You will be expected to wear the following:
• Steel capped boots/wellies
• Work trousers
• Vocational polo and hoodie
