Autumn 1

Year 10

Power and Conflict Poetry  

Students will study poetry from AQA’s ‘Power and Conflict’ poetry cluster.  

Students will prepare to answer one comparative question on one named poem printed on the exam paper and one other poem of their choice. This is a closed book exam.   

  Poems: Kamikaze (Garland), Storm on the Island (Heaney), Charge of the Light Brigade (Tennyson), Bayonet Charge (Hughes), Exposure (Owen), The Prelude (Wordsworth) 

Year 11

Completion of any outstanding Literature work.  Speaking and Listening, and Explorations in Creative Reading 

Students will prepare and deliver a short, spoken presentation followed by a Q&A session for their GCSE English Language Spoken Language endorsement.  

Following this, students will study  ‘Explorations in Creative Reading’ to prepare for GCSE Paper 1 Part A (Fiction Reading). 

Autumn 2

Year 10

A Christmas Carol (Dickens) 

Pre 20th Century fiction full text study.  

Students will prepare to write about a short extract from the text, and about the text as a whole in a closed book exam.

Year 11

Explorations in Creative Writing  

Students prepare for GCSE Paper 1 Part B (Fiction Writing). 

Spring 1

Year 10

Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare) 

Students will read and study the whole play and its historical context.

Students will prepare to write about a short extract from the play, and about the play as a whole in a closed book exam. 

Year 11

Reading: Viewpoints & Perspectives 

Working towards GCSE Paper 2 Part A (Reading Non-Fiction), students will learn the skills and exam techniques needed to evaluate and compare writers’ viewpoints and perspectives in unseen texts. 

Spring 2

Year 10

Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare) 

Continued.  

Year 11

Unseen Poetry

Students will prepare to answer one question on one unseen poem and one question comparing this poem with a second unseen poem. 

Summer 1

Year 10

Modern Drama: An Inspector Calls 

Students will read and study the whole play, and its historical context. 

Students will prepare to answer one essay question from a choice of two in a closed book exam.

Poems: Tissue (Dharker), Ozymandias (Shelley), The Emigree (Rumens), Checking Out Me History (Agard), My Last Duchess (Browning), and London (Blake).
